Zafèm: Defining a Musical Era
The year 2023 undeniably belonged to Zafèm. No other group in Haiti’s music industry has generated as much discussion or captivated as much attention. On social media, across traditional media platforms, and especially following the May release of their album Las, Zafèm became the focal point of conversations throughout the summer. Their album breathed fresh life into the new generation of compas music.
For some, Las represents a musical revolution; for others, it signifies a renewal, an invigorating new wave, and an extraordinary artistic proposition. Indeed, the album emerges as a masterful blend of various musical styles, incorporating elements of jazz, blues, funk, yanvalou, congo, and even Latin influences a true creative cocktail. In the past thirty years, no album has received such widespread critical acclaim, warmly embraced by seasoned music enthusiasts, prominent critics, and renowned musicians alike.
The result is nothing short of astonishing a true masterpiece crafted by two brilliant minds behind the newly formed group, Zafèm: composer Déner Ceïde and the immensely talented vocalist Réginald Cangé. After years of meticulous work, they have gifted the world Las, a musical gem.
Through this album, Ceïde and Cangé invite listeners on a rich musical journey, primarily in Haitian Creole, but also in English and Spanish, reflecting a deep commitment to cultural and artistic diversity. Tracks like "Nakita," "Acércate," and "Coming Soon" demonstrate their exploration of different musical shores and horizons, all while reimagining them within the vibrant pulse of compas.
The lyrics across Las are steeped in poetic imagery and metaphors elements that have largely been absent from compas from its early days to the modern era. In this regard, Las rises to meet an important challenge. It doesn't limit itself to raw, socially engaged messaging, often seen as the voice of the voiceless. Instead, it elevates its protest songs into a poetic dimension. Pieces like Dyaman nan bidonvil a poignant plea for the basic needs and well-being of street children, and notably featured in the 2023 national baccalaureate exams Lalin ak Solèy, and Ati Sole, illustrate this merging of social consciousness and lyrical artistry. Songs like Lalin ak Solèy and Dlo Dous immerse listeners into a world of love an eros-fueled, sensual, almost breathless passion while maintaining a rich, discursive depth.
Las is also a tribute to Haiti’s tangible and intangible heritage. The album pays homage to the nation's cultural treasures, celebrating historical, linguistic, and architectural riches across various regions. It stands as a testament to Haiti’s history, voodoo rhythms, and Caribbean island culture, weaving them into a world of musical and poetic beauty.
Today, the entire country continues to dance, hum, and sing to Las a dazzling artistic achievement crafted for pure joy, admiration, and contemplation. Haitian music is living in the era of Zafèm. How long will this moment last? No one knows. Only time will tell.
